Chapter Nineteen

Elizabeth managed to take in some of the breathtaking landscape even though Nicolas had set a quick pace. He steered the group back toward the road and headed northwest from the castle. Dark clouds formed overhead. Hopefully, the storm would hold off long enough for her to examine the place where they found her.

After what felt like an hour’s ride, Nicolas slowed to a walk and nodded his head. His men fanned out to provide protection. She stayed quiet, not wanting to draw attention to their group in case there were sentinels near the border. The loud jingle of the bridles caused the birds to take flight. The flap of their wings made a thunderous ruckus.

“There is the tree,” Nicolas said as he pointed to a large oak at her right. “Thomas spotted you lying at its base with your head toward Fairwick Castle and your feet positioned toward Scotland. You may take a brief moment to study the tree,” he said in a low voice.

“Thank you.” She dismounted from Midnight, held up her skirt, and picked her way to the foot of the tree. With eyes closed, she placed both hands flat against the tree trunk and waited, for what she was unsure. Nothing happened. She stood unmoving and continued to wait for a revelation, but nothing came to her. Lifting her lids, she removed her hands and walked around the base of the tree, searching for clues to her past. Still nothing.

Oh, God in heaven, please, please reveal my past to me! I’m begging You. Please tell me my name! She moaned as her forehead rested against the bark.

Nicolas waited no longer. He vaulted off his horse, came up behind her, and took hold of her slumped shoulders. “Isabelle, I’m sorry this has not provided you with answers, but we must be away from here before the border guard comes to question our presence. Animosity still abounds, and it would not end well for either side.”

“Of course, you are right. I don’t wish for a confrontation with a Scotsman.” Over her shoulder, she took one final look at the tree as she trudged beside her husband back to Midnight. With a tender touch, he placed her in the saddle.

Before he had time to mount, his own guard returned. “They are headed this way, m’lord.”

Fear caught in her throat.

With a smirk, he said, “Shall we race toward home, wife?”

She quickly recovered from her fright and winked. “By all means, husband.”

Nicolas and Elizabeth bolted down the road. Their guards joined in the jocular atmosphere as the wind carried their laughter. No Scotsman would catch the merry band of travelers today.

Once they journeyed deep onto Nicolas’s land, the group slowed their pace. The wind whipped around them as additional black clouds swirled in the sky. Nicolas twisted in his saddle. “It seems we might be caught in a rainstorm. I know of a cave near the seashore if you are game for an adventure.” His brows wiggled.

She scanned the faces of their guard to gage their reaction to his idea.
